Medical Referral

To schedule an appointment at Opmedic, ideally, patients need to be referred by a physician.  However, a medical referral is not required when the patient has already been seen and evaluated by a surgeon and is already awaiting surgery in the public sector.

Patient Evaluation by the Physician

During the first meeting, the surgeon and the patient get to know each other and assess the overall situation.

This meeting will allow the surgeon to determine whether or not the patient presents the pathology for which he/she was referred and if so, if surgery is the required treatment.  Occasionally, the doctor comes to the conclusion that surgery is not necessary for a patient and that medical treatment would be more effective.  The doctor bases his/her decision on a variety of factors including the patient’s overall state of health, his comfort and the benefits and disadvantages on his general state of health.

If surgery is recommended, the doctor will take all the time needed with the patient to go over the various surgical approaches, the benefits and disadvantages and the way things work in both the private and public sectors.  This information will give the patient the tools needed to make an enlightened decision as to which treatment he/she will choose.

For the patient, the objective of this meeting is to make sure that the patient understands the various options available to him/her.  The patient gets the answers to all his/her questions and armed with this information, he will be able to make an informed decision as to the type of treatment and where to get said treatment.

All surgical evaluation and follow-up consults are covered by public health insurance plans, with the exception of cosmetic plastic surgery services.
